Spotlight on Volunteers: Susan Harrie Davalos, RN

Susan Harrie Davalos is the Community Relations Chairperson for the International Friendship Club (IFC) in Puerto Vallarta. Susan is a registered nurse with over 30 years experience in Pediatrics and Neonatology at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California. She started as an LVN in 1978 and furthered her education to become an RN in 1984, earning an Associate Degree in Science.

She has many skills and qualities as well as layers of leadership in service these many years both on the job and off. Part time employment takes her away from this “fine city by the bay” to the other “fine city by the bay,” Oakland and Children’s Hospital NICU three times a year.

Nursing is a teaching career! Susan has volunteered in a teaching capacity for many years in many ways.

“You cannot take the nurse out of me” (even when the workday is over), is one of her favorite sayings!

Susan has been a part of the Cleft Palate Program of the IFC since 2001, assisting Coordinator Patricia Mendez with whatever the need might be.

Both of these women do all of the work they do and put in countless hours to serve the needs of the Puerto Vallarta community solely as volunteers.

There is no paid staff to run these incredible programs. When you become a member of the International Friendship Club or take one of their Home Tours you can be assured that the money goes to charity and not to pay a salary.

Currently, Susan works to help out the community of Puerto Vallarta as Coordinator of Community Services for the IFC.

The job calls for a listening ear and a warm smile, as there is just never enough to go around: money, medicine, food or time, but a listening ear and a warm smile can soothe an aching heart.

Susan makes her rounds to the various agencies and community outreach centers on a regular basis and is able to make sure that the IFC donations go where the need is greatest. Susan has been married to Pedro for over 20 years and they reside in El Pitillal. “Working beside this good woman, there is a great man”.

Living the life they have been given could not be possible without hard work and dedication whether together and apart.

Robert and Chris are Susan’s grown sons and they reside in northern California, making work at Children’s Hospital a wonderful time to visit with them as well. It all works out! The International Friendship Club is a registered charitable organization in Mexico listed as Club Internacional de la Amistad de Puerto Vallarta A.C.

It is located at Edificio Parian del Puente #13, Calle Libertad Corner Miramar, Colonia El Centro, PUERTO VALLARTA, Jalisco, Mexico, 48300.
